The Relevance of Dual Tasking for Improving Trunk Muscle Endurance After Back Surgery

2021

Abstract Objective To determine the effect of dual tasking on trunk muscle endurance in patients after lumbar diskectomy. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Rehabilitation hospital setting. Participants Individuals (N=14) undergoing primary lumbar diskectomy. Intervention Using a randomized design on 2 separate days, muscle endurance was evaluated during prone bridging and Biering-Sorensen tests. Each test was randomly performed under 2 cognitive conditions: single task without cognitive condition and self-regulated dual task (ie, mathematical task). Main Outcome Measures The primary outcomes were time to failure and pain assessed by the visual analog scale from 0 to 100 mm. The secondar…

Clinical analysis following lumbar interspinous devices implant: where we are and where we go

2014

Objectives:We present our experience with patients treated with interspinous devices who are affected by neurogenic intermittent claudication (NIC) or lumbar disc herniation (LDH) where the interspinous system has been inserted following microdiscectomy.Study design:Retrospective study. Methods:This study included patients (n=100) with NIC secondary to lumbar spinal stenosis (group 1), and patients (n=100) with LDH (group 2) in whom the interspinous device has been implanted following radicular decompression in a period spanning 6 years. The latter have been compared with a homogenous group of patients (n=100) where no interspinous system has been implanted following microdiscectomy (group 3…

Standing time and daily proportion of sedentary time are associated with pain-related disability in a one month accelerometer measurement in adults w…

2021

Abstract Objectives The association between the subjective experience of pain-related disability (PRD) and device-measured physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) in overweight and obese adults is not well known. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations of pain markers with accelerometer-measured SB duration and different intensities of PA among physically inactive middle-aged adults with overweight or obesity. Methods This cross-sectional analysis included 72 subjects (27 men) with mean age of 57.9 (SD 6.7) years and mean BMI of 31.6 (SD 4.1) kg/m2. SB and standing time (ST), breaks in sedentary time, light physical activity (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physic…

Changes in Health Utility, Disability, and Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients After Spinal Fusion

2014

STUDY DESIGN Prospective longitudinal database study. OBJECTIVE To evaluate changes in health utility, disability, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients undergoing spinal fusion. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Recently, measuring disability, HRQOL, and health utility has become important when defining the value of surgical interventions. METHODS Data of spinal fusion patients from a prospective longitudinal database were analyzed. Health utility was captured by SF-6D (six dimensional health state classification from the 36-dimensional Short Form Health Survey) score, disability by Oswestry Disability Index, and HRQOL by the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey. The changes in these…

Assessment of Construct Validity of the Oswestry Disability Index and the Scoliosis Research Society–30 Questionnaire (SRS-30) in Patients With Degen…

2019

Observational cohort study. To measure and compare the structural validity of the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and the Scoliosis Research Society-30 (SRS-30) questionnaire in an adult population with prolonged degenerative thoracolumbar disease. The ODI and the SRS-30 are commonly used patient-reported outcome instruments to assess back-specific disability and symptoms related to scoliosis. Still, these instruments have not been validated for degenerative spinal disease with different stages of deformity.Altogether, 637 consecutive adult patients with degenerative spinal pathologies were included. The patients completed the ODI (version 2.0), the 23 preoperative items of the SRS-30, a gene…

Therapeutic aquatic exercise in the treatment of low back pain: a systematic review.

2008

Objective: To examine the effectiveness of therapeutic aquatic exercise in the treatment of low back pain. Design: A systematic review. Methods: A search was performed of PEDro, CINAHL (ovid), PUBMED, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register and SPORTDiscus databases to identify relevant studies published between 1990 and 2007. Population: Adults suffering from low back pain. Intervention: All types of therapeutic aquatic exercise. Comparison: All clinical trials using a control group. Outcomes: Oswestry Disability Index, McGill Pain Questionnaire, subjective assessment scale for pain (e.g. visual analogue scale) and number of work days lost as a direct result of low back pain. Methodological q…

Reliability and Validity of a New Objective Tool for Low Back Pain Functional Assessment

2011

Study design Classification and functional assessment model for nonspecific low back pain (LBP) patients and controls on the basis of kinematic analysis parameters. Objective Develop a logistic regression model using kinematic analysis variables to (1) discriminate between LBP patients and controls and (2) obtain objective parameters for LBP functional assessment. Summary of background data Functional assessment of spinal disorders has been carried out traditionally by means of subjective scales. Objective functional techniques have been developed, which usually involve the application of external loads or the analysis of highly standardized trunk flexion-extension maneuvers. Few studies ha…

Further validation of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS-30) questionnaire among adult patients with degenerative spinal disorder.

2019

Purpose The Scoliosis Research Society (SRS-30) questionnaire proved valid in measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adult patients with spinal deformity or degenerative disease. This study further assesses the validity of the SRS-30 by comparing its results with other HRQoL instruments, such as Oswestry disability index (ODI) and the RAND-36, among unselected adult patients with degenerative spinal disorder. Materials and methods 628 consecutive patients completed the SRS-30, the ODI, the pain visual analog scale (VAS), and RAND-36 questionnaires. Using a 9 mm minimal important difference threshold of the VAS, patients were divided into three groups of symptom location: back p…
